It was used in different rituals in the Ancient Egypt and a certain type of wine was even used in the process of embalming. Even now wine is used by the Christian church during Mass and it is related to the blood of Christ.


Although time has passed, wine is still one of the world’s favorite alcoholic drinks. After the discovery of the New World, vineyards were cultivated here too. Although for a long time European wines, especially those from France, Italy and Spain, were on top of the list when it came to wine quality, wines from the Americas also became appreciated world wide.


What is more, the American culture has leaded the history of wine to the birth of a new kind of wine which is light wine. A light wine is a wine that has less than 14% content of alcohol. By reducing the percent of alcohol, the calorie number is also reduced.


The first trials to make a light wine took place in the 1980s, but the result was not at all satisfactory,. To make a wine light or to reduce the quantity of alcohol from it you have the cut back on the amount of sugar the grapes contain. By doing this, also the flavor and the taste of wine are diminished.


However, a new effort was made in 2005, when, on 4th of April, Beringer Blass launched White Lie Early Season Chardonnay. The label, part of the Australian beverage giant Foster’s Group, was the first major company that tried to produce a high quality wine since 1980. The wine was addressed to women as they are the most aware of their weight.


The grapes used for producing this type of wine were grown in Santa Barbara, a region where the climate is colder. As a result, the grapes will naturally have less sugar and the taste of the wine will not be so much influenced. After all, White Lie was a Chardonnay and that is a name that must be earned.


Since then, people have become more and more interested in light wines. They are only for those dieting, but for all the people that want to make a healthy choice. Light wines mean less alcohol, but they still keep all the good properties of wine.
